Treatment Cost Estimator

We have developed algorithms to estimate the cost of patient care in GPRD from an NHS perspective by utilising reference costs available in the public domain for each of the following:
  • All prescribed items including drugs, dressings & appliances.
  • Primary care contacts by location and staff grade.
  • Clinical investigations.
  • Hospital in-patient admissions by Health Resource Group.
  • Outpatient appointments according to speciality and timing (includes A&E visits).

Research Productivity Tools

Automated and semi-automated applications to facilitate GPRD-based research, including:

CohortGenerator. For cohort studies where drug histories may be complex and the therapies of interest used singly or in combination, as in the management of chronic disease, CohortGenerator resolves a patient’s prescription history into a sequence of discrete monotherapies or combination therapies of interest, assigning a quality score to each therapy based on characteristics such as duration and prescription frequency.

BaselineGenerator. Automatically generates baseline characteristics for a given set of patients and their index dates, including:

  • Height, weight, BMI (calculated if absent)
  • Blood pressure
  • Smoking status
  • Tests such as total, HDL and LDL cholesterol; random and fasting blood glucose; creatinine and creatinine clearance (calculated by means of the Cockcroft-Gault formula if absent)
  • GP contacts in the previous 12 months
  • Prior scripts: antihypertensive, antiplatelet, lipid-lowering, antidepressant and anxiolytic drugs
  • Prior large-vessel and renal disease, and visual problems
  • Charlson co-morbidity index (calculated).
